Okay, I am a horrible pug mom. Violet’s birthday was Saturday and I completely forgot. Bad me. She did get eggs for breakfast, but she gets that every weekend so I really can’t even count that for a treat. Regardless, we are so happy that she is with us. Happy Birthday to our little black angel.

Sadly, just a couple of days after turning 13 years old, Baby Girl’s health took a turn for the worse. With a heavy heart, we had to make the decision to ease her from this world. Run free little girl, run to the Rainbow Bridge where you can breathe easy and walk without pain. The past three and a half years have revolved around taking care of Baby Girl and making sure that she was happy and healthy. And then suddenly, our world has become so normal. The tears are still flowing as we adjust to life without that tiny bundle of a pug.
We are forever grateful to SouthEast Pug Rescue & Adoption for bringing Baby Girl into our lives. Without the dedication of volunteers, Baby Girl would not have had the opportunity to come into rescue. Pugfest! This event is the first thing that goes on my calendar each year. It is SouthEast Pug Rescue & Adoption’s biggest fundraiser. All I can say is that if you haven’t been, you are missing out! There are costume contests, vendors with all kinds of pug items, tables with SEPRA t-shirts, silent auction items, and raffles for fantastic items. But the best thing is ALL the pugs! Gus is the most amazing pug

In October, we made our annual pilgrimage to Georgia for SouthEast Pug Rescue & Adoption’s Pugfest. The Friday night before the big event we met the most amazing pug-Gus! Gus is 15 years and 10 months old that was rescued by SEPRA and adopted by Jonathan ten years ago. Although, he can’t walk due to a bad back, he is carted around in little red wagon sporting some serious style. Gus is one of those pugs that you see and you want to hold and cuddle and snuggle, which is exactly what I did to him. Gus travelled all the way from Florida with Jonathan as his driver. Instead of Driving Miss Daisy, it was Driving Mister Gus. Jonathan is an amazing caregiver for Gus and is an inspiration to all pug people. You can tell a pug and a person made a huge impression on you if you are still talking about how lucky you were to meet them weeks later. Whew, it has been a long and hot summer at the Honky Tonk. First our A/C went out and management was starting to get nervous about us getting overheated, but the weather worked out and it cooled off long enough for the new unit to be installed. Then on April 27th a series of tornadoes blew through town. The storms started at 9:00am and went until 11:00pm. We all went into a safe area to ride out the weather. Thankfully only a few trees on the property were blown down, but we were without power for 101 hours. I didn’t count, but the manager at the ‘Tonk was sure counting. When the power did come on, the manager made us clean the whole place. Ugh! We’ve had a lot of visitors come through this summer and I am always the gracious hosts. I like to make sure that everyone is happy and having a good time. That gets you about caught up with summer activities and now for the big news… I am retiring from the Honky Tonk. I know a lot of people though that I’d stay here forever and even though I am welcome to, I am going to live with a new family. It’s been great here, but it’s time for me to move on to live the good life. I’ll miss everyone and especially my BFFs Lola, Baby Girl, and Violet. XOXO Peaches
Manny has been adopted

Manny is one of the pugs from the local hoarding situation. When he came to us a couple of weeks ago, he was a skinny, scabby pug. Most of his sores have healed and with the help of good food and supplements his skins is doing so much better. Manny has a great appetite and has already gained some weight. It wasn’t any time at all before someone came forward to adopt him. I know that he’ll live a wonderful life with his new family and pug sister. We’ll miss you Manny!

On August 9th, I got a call from someone that I know regarding 50 pugs that needed homes. She had heard through various sources that these pugs were in a hoarding situation and needed rescue. Needless to say, I put the word out to my pug rescue contacts and went to bed in tears. The next day was a series of phone calls, text messages, and emails. So many local and regional rescue groups stepped in for assistance and to foster the dogs. After it was all said and done, it was only 4 pure bred pugs and the rest were other breeds and mixed breed dogs. One of the pugs went to Atlanta to a rescue group; K-911. SEPRA accepted the other three. Two of the little girls, Etta and Pippa, came to stay with us until we could get them to Alabama into a foster home. Manny was the only boy and he stayed with us for 3 weeks until he was able to get on a transport to Albany, NY. These pugs were remarkably well socialized and wanted so badly to be next to people and receive love and affection. Medically, Manny only suffered from open sores probably due to scratching at fleas. The girls are not so fortunate; all three of them have some back issues that will need to be evaluated. This comes on the heels of another hoarding situation where pugs and Boston Terriers were removed from a property in Georgia. SouthEast Pug Rescue and Adoption took in 4 of the pugs which face months of medical rehabilitation. I’ve seen episodes of animal hoarding on TV, and although horrifying, you are watching it from the comfort of your couch with your animals that are well cared for. In real life, someone has to pick up the pieces and put the dogs back together. If you are aware of a hoarding situation, please contact your local authorities and animal shelter.
